Tom Carey’s songs are smart and compelling, sometimes surprisingly funny, and have drawn comparisons to John Hiatt, Lyle Lovett, John Prine and Jimmy Buffett. His warm roadhouse baritone brings to mind “blue-eyed soul” singers like Van Morrison, Gregg Allman and Delbert McClinton.
For the past 15 years Tom has led Heartache Tonight, one of the most successful Eagles tributes in the U.S., but the desire to play his original music never went away. “I’ve been dying to get this band in the studio, and I’ve been writing all along,” he says. Their ne recording, Tom Carey & the Ghost Runners, features his Heartache Tonight bandmates Tom O’Brien, John Forrest, Bean Weng, Jim Altenbach and Chris Plasch.
“We’ll be playing lots of new stuff as well as favorites from my first two CDs. I think people will enjoy the new take on some old songs and I’m looking forward to playing the new ones with these great musicians.”
The original Tom Carey Band built a huge following in the Midwest, selling over 10,000 copies of their independently produced CDs, The Last Resort and Sugarmoon. One of Tom’s songs, “Talking About Love,” was featured in Corona Beer’s “Sound Waves” ad campaign. The gospel-tinged ballad aired on stations across the country.
Tom and his band have shared stages with The Doobie Brothers, Bad Company, The Charlie Daniels Band, America, Eddie Money, Blues Traveler, the Little River Band and The Spinners among many others, and they did a memorable week at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in Key West.
