Luke Malewicz is one of the premier jazz trombonists in Chicago. He’s a native of Nowa Sol, Poland, and moved to Chicago at age 11, when he was already a budding trombone phenom. After receiving degrees from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and the Manhattan School of Music, he returned to Chicago, where he’s a regular at Andy’s Jazz Club, the Jazz Showcase, and the famous Green Mill. Luke is the leader of the Heritage Big Band – the 16-piece big band formerly known as the East Hubbard Street Big Band, that wowed Hey Nonny audiences back in November. When he’s on the road, Luke has performed with Mary Wilson, The Four Tops, the Temptations, and the Grammy-Award- winning Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. For this show, Luke will be leading his ace Quintet in exploring the wide-ranging tunes of Brazilian composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim. As you know, Jobim was the master of modern samba music, composing such classics as Girl From Ipanema, Quiet Nights (Corcovado), and Desifinado. But he wrote hundreds of other great tunes, including our favorite, the Waters of March (Aguas de Marco), and they’ll all provide a launching pad for the virtuosic flights of fancy for which the Malewicz Quintet is famous. This will be a night you won’t want to miss!
